Black mold in bedroom: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I’ve just noticed a few small black spots starting to appear in the corner of our master bedroom where the wall meets the ceiling. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah Park villa for two years and it’s never been an issue until after that unusually humid spell we had last month. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar solution, or do I need to call in a professional mold inspection company?

The black spots appearing after a humid spell are a common issue in Dubai villas, often due to condensation where cool AC walls meet warmer, humid air. For a small area (under one square meter), a DIY approach can be attempted. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a detergent solution, not just vinegar, which is often insufficient for porous surfaces like drywall. Dry it completely with a fan.

However, given the new respiratory symptoms in children, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The visible spots are often just the surface of a larger colony growing within the wall cavity, especially if there's a hidden leak from the AC condensate drain or a roof seepage issue. A certified inspector uses moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden moisture source, which is the only way to prevent rapid regrowth. They can also take air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species, which is critical for assessing health risks and planning the correct remediation method, particularly with children present. In many cases, the wall section needs to be carefully opened and replaced to fully resolve the problem.
