Black mold in bedroom: DIY with bleach or call professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black speckles forming along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom in Mirdif. It's gotten worse since the humidity kicked in a couple of months ago, and I'm worried it's affecting our air quality. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach from ACE, or do I absolutely need to call a professional mold removal company, and what's a realistic cost for a single room?

Black speckles in a bedroom corner are a common issue in Dubai, often caused by condensation from air conditioning meeting warm, humid air. This typically indicates a surface mould problem, but the root cause is excess moisture.
For a small area (under one square meter), a DIY approach can be effective. Use a detergent solution, not just bleach. Bleach only removes surface colour and can irritate your airways; it doesn't kill the mould roots in porous materials like drywall or paint. Scrub with a mix of water and detergent, then dry the area thoroughly with a fan. However, this is only a temporary fix if the condensation issue isn't resolved. You must identify and address the source of the moisture—often poor insulation around the AC duct or a setting that causes the unit to cycle on and off too frequently, creating more condensation. Given the mould has been growing for months and is in your sleeping area, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. Spores can become airborne and affect indoor air quality, potentially exacerbating allergies. A certified inspector can use moisture meters to find the exact source of water intrusion and take air or surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mould species. This step is crucial, as it determines the required remediation protocol. For a single room, professional remediation cost varies significantly based on the extent of the contamination behind the walls. It is almost always more cost-effective to get a proper diagnosis first to avoid repeated DIY attempts that fail to solve the underlying problem. |
