Black mold in bedroom: first step for inspection?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Al Barsha for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of our bedroom wall, right behind the headboard. It's gotten way worse since the weather got more humid last month. I'm worried it might be affecting our health as we've all been waking up with stuffy noses. What's the first step I should take to get a proper mold inspection done here?

The first step is to stop the moisture source. In Dubai's climate, that black spot behind your headboard is a classic sign of condensation buildup from your AC unit, made worse by the recent high humidity. The wall is cold from the AC, and humid air condenses on it, creating a perfect environment for mold. Move the headboard away from the wall immediately to allow air to circulate and dry the area.

For a proper inspection, do not disturb the mold by scrubbing or applying DIY solutions, as this can release spores. A professional inspection is recommended for a villa, as the issue could be inside the wall or related to a hidden leak. They will use moisture meters to find the water source and may recommend air or surface sampling. In the UAE, a reputable inspector should be able to provide a detailed report with lab-identified species, which is crucial for understanding potential health risks and planning the correct remediation method.
