Black mold in bedroom from AC leak with sick child?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our villa's master bedroom has been leaking a little for the past couple of months, and now I’m seeing these black speckles spreading on the wall behind the wardrobe. My youngest son has been waking up with a stuffy nose and a weird cough that seems to get better when he’s at school. Is this definitely black mold and who should I call to test and remove it safely with kids in the house?

Based on your description, what you are seeing is highly consistent with Stachybotrys chartarum, commonly referred to as black mold. This toxigenic mold thrives on the constant moisture from your AC unit's leak, feeding on the cellulose in your wall's drywall and the organic dust behind the wardrobe. The Dubai climate, with its high ambient humidity, exacerbates this problem, as AC systems are under constant strain and condensation leaks are a frequent failure point.

Your son's symptoms—nocturnal stuffy nose and a persistent cough that alleviates outside the home—are significant clinical indicators of mold exposure. Mycotoxins and mold spores from the colony become airborne, especially when the AC operates, and are inhaled during sleep, irritating the respiratory system.

You must treat this as a serious indoor air quality issue. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as improper disturbance will aerosolize a high concentration of spores and toxins throughout the bedroom, drastically increasing exposure risk.

The required action is a professional mold inspection and remediation process. In the UAE, reputable companies like ours follow IICRC S520 standards for mold remediation. The process involves: 1) Containing the affected area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to prevent cross-contamination. 2) Safely removing and disposing of the mold-infested building materials (drywall, insulation). 3) HEPA vacuuming and abrasive cleaning of the remaining structure. 4) Applying antimicrobial agents to eliminate residual mold roots. 5) Conducting post-remediation verification (PRV) testing to confirm spore counts have returned to ambient, safe levels before the containment is removed.

For the safety of your family, especially your son, you need to engage a certified professional immediately.
