Black mold in bedroom: health risks for toddler?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and I'm worried the recent humidity made it worse. What are the specific health risks we should look out for, especially for my toddler who sleeps in the next room?

Black mould exposure can cause respiratory irritation, particularly in children. For a toddler sleeping nearby, watch for increased allergy-like symptoms: persistent runny nose, coughing, wheezing, or skin rashes. In Dubai's high humidity, mould thrives on condensation from AC-cooled walls facing the outdoor heat.

The primary risk isn't typically from a single exposure but from prolonged inhalation of spores in a confined space. Since mould is behind boxes on an exterior wall, the issue is likely persistent moisture from inadequate insulation or a leak. Ventilation is critical; ensure the closet isn't tightly sealed and that the room's AC is well-maintained to control humidity.

In the UAE, landlords are generally responsible for rectifying structural issues causing dampness under Law No. 26 of 2007. For a case involving a toddler, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the moisture source and extent. They can perform air quality tests to determine spore counts in the bedroom versus other areas. Remediation should be handled by certified technicians to avoid spreading spores during cleanup. Until addressed, keep the toddler out of the room and improve airflow by using an exhaust fan or dehumidifier.
