Black mold in bedroom: landlord or cleaner first in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall, right behind the headboard. It's gotten worse since the weather got more humid last month. I'm really worried about our health sleeping right next to it. What's the best way to get this treated properly here in Dubai, and should I call my landlord first or a professional cleaning company?

Contact your landlord first. Dubai Law No. 26 of 2007 (amended by Law No. 33 of 2008) generally holds the landlord responsible for maintaining the property's structure, which includes addressing the root cause of mold like leaks or insulation issues. Sending them a clear photo of the affected area is a good first step.
Given its location behind furniture and the recent spread with humidity, this is likely a persistent issue requiring more than just surface cleaning. The black spots suggest a moisture problem, possibly from a small leak in the wall or, very commonly here, condensation from an AC unit. The constant cycling of AC in our climate can create significant condensation if a drain line is blocked or the unit is improperly insulated. For health safety, move your bed away from that wall immediately. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize spores and doesn't address the moisture source. A professional inspection is advised to identify the exact species and, more importantly, the moisture source. A reputable local company with a microbiology lab can provide a culture test to identify the mold type and measure the indoor air quality, which is crucial information for your landlord and for planning the correct remediation strategy. The goal is to fix the water problem first, then safely remove the contaminated materials. |
