Black mold in bedroom: landlord or DIY?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of our bedroom wall behind the wardrobe. It's an interior wall and the room feels really damp, even though we keep the AC running. I'm worried it's making my allergies worse. What's the best way to get rid of this properly, and should I call my landlord or just handle it myself?

This situation requires immediate attention, as the dampness and spread suggest an active moisture source. In Dubai, this is often caused by a combination of high external humidity and condensation from AC units, especially if the unit is undersized or not draining properly.
Contact your landlord first. Under typical Dubai rental contracts, structural issues like dampness in walls are the landlord's responsibility to investigate and remediate. They should send a professional to diagnose the source of the moisture, which is the critical first step. Simply cleaning the visible mold without fixing the underlying water issue will result in it returning quickly. Do not attempt a significant DIY removal yourself. Disturbing extensive black mold can aerosolize spores and worsen your allergy symptoms. For a small area, you could carefully wipe the surface with a diluted vinegar solution, but this is only a temporary measure. Given the description of it spreading behind furniture, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the extent within the wall cavity. A proper remediation involves identifying and stopping the moisture intrusion, containing the area to prevent cross-contamination, safely removing affected materials, and verifying clearance with post-remediation testing. This is not a typical cleaning task. Your health concern is valid; indoor mold is a common allergen and irritant in our climate. Document the issue with photos and formally notify your landlord to initiate the process. |
