Black mold in bedroom: treat myself or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall, right behind the headboard. It's gotten worse since the humidity spiked last week. I'm worried it's affecting our sleep as we've both been waking up with stuffy noses. What's the most effective way to treat this ourselves, or should I call our building management in Downtown Dubai immediately?

That black patch behind your headboard is a common issue in Dubai bedrooms, especially during humid periods. The wall is likely a cold spot where condensation forms from your AC, creating a perfect damp environment for mold. Your stuffy noses are a typical reaction to the spores it's releasing.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can address it yourself. First, move the headboard to allow the area to dry completely. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water, or use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner from a hardware store. Wear a mask and gloves, scrub the area thoroughly, and let it dry. To prevent recurrence, ensure better air circulation around that wall and consider using a dehumidifier in the room.

However, since it's spreading and you're already experiencing symptoms, the source of moisture may be more significant. It could be a hidden leak in the wall from a pipe or, more commonly in high-rises, seepage from the external building envelope due to recent humidity. In this case, your building management in Downtown Dubai should be notified immediately. Dubai Law No. 11 of 2013 places responsibility on the Owner's Association for maintaining the common property and building structure, which includes the external walls. They are obligated to investigate and address the root cause, as your DIY treatment will only be temporary if there's an external leak or internal condensation issue they need to fix. A professional inspection can confirm the mold type and moisture source if the problem persists after their intervention.
