Black mold in bedroom: urgent professional or DIY vinegar?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and I'm worried the recent humidity made it worse. I’m starting to get a bit of a headache when I’m in that room. How urgent is it that I get a professional to handle this, or can I tackle it myself with a vinegar solution this weekend?

A professional inspection is strongly recommended for that type of discovery. The location on an exterior wall in Dubai's climate strongly suggests a condensation issue from the temperature differential between your air-conditioned room and the humid outdoor air. This is a common source of hidden mold growth.
The combination of visible black discoloration and your physical symptom of headaches elevates the urgency. While many molds are irritants, the specific type and its potential mycotoxins can only be identified through lab analysis of a sample. DIY cleaning with vinegar is a surface-level fix that will likely fail because it doesn't address the moisture source. The mold's root system (hyphae) can remain deep within the wall, allowing it to regrow quickly. For a proper remediation, the affected section of drywall may need to be removed to inspect the cavity and insulation for hidden spread, the moisture source must be corrected (often by improving insulation or ventilation), and the area should be properly contained during removal to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home. A professional assessment will determine the extent and provide a protocol. In the meantime, keep the closet door closed and avoid disturbing the area. |
