Black mold in closet: call management or DIY removal?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of the building. I'm really worried it's the reason my allergies have been so bad this past month.
What's the most effective way to get rid of it for good, and should I call the building management first or just handle it myself?

Contact your building management first. In Dubai, landlords are responsible for fixing structural issues causing mold, like leaks or insulation problems in external walls. Document the mold with photos and formally request an inspection. This creates a paper trail and addresses the root cause, which is likely external moisture intrusion through that wall.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a diluted detergent solution, but avoid bleach as it only removes the color and can worsen indoor air quality. Thoroughly dry the area with a fan afterward. However, given its location on an exterior wall and your worsening allergies, a professional assessment is wise. The mold you see might be part of a larger colony inside the wall cavity. A proper inspection, often involving moisture meters and sometimes thermal imaging, can find the hidden source of the dampness. They can also advise if the wall requires specialized drying techniques common for Dubai's high-humidity climate. For your health, consider moving the stored clothing until the issue is fully resolved to prevent spores from spreading. |
