Black mold in closet: call management or handle myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an outside wall. It’s gotten worse since the humidity kicked in last month. What’s the best way to get rid of this safely, and should I call our building management first or just handle it myself?

That black mold is a classic sign of condensation forming on a cold outside wall, especially during our humid months. The wall gets cold from the AC, and the humid air condenses on it, creating the perfect damp environment for mold to grow.

For a small, surface-level patch, you can handle it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water, scrub the area, and let it dry completely. Avoid bleach; it only removes the color and doesn't kill the root structure, so the mold often returns.

However, since it's on an outside wall and has spread, the underlying moisture issue is the real problem. This is where involving building management is crucial. In Dubai, the responsibility for structural issues like external wall insulation and leaks typically falls on the building owner or management. They need to be notified to investigate and fix the root cause—otherwise, the mold will keep coming back no matter how much you clean it.

If the area is larger than a square meter, or if you notice a persistent musty smell or any respiratory irritation, a professional inspection is wise. They can use moisture meters to find the exact condensation points and take air samples to identify the mold type, which dictates the proper remediation method. For now, notify management to address the structural cause while you clean the visible growth.
