Black mold in closet: call management or hire cleaner?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an outside wall facing the Marina. The musty smell is really strong when we open the closet doors, and it's definitely gotten worse since the humidity spiked last month.
What's the best way to get rid of this for good, and should I call our building management first or just hire a professional cleaning company myself?

Call building management first. This is likely a building envelope or condensation issue, not just surface dirt. The outside wall facing the Marina is a major clue; it could be a leak from the external cladding or a cold bridge causing condensation inside the wall cavity. Management is responsible for investigating and repairing the structural cause.
While you wait for them, do not attempt to clean it with bleach or other DIY solutions. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can spread spores throughout the room. Keep the closet doors closed to contain the musty smell. For the actual remediation, a professional cleaning company is the correct path, but only after the leak is fixed. Look for a provider that does more than wipe surfaces. They should offer a full inspection, including moisture mapping with a thermal camera to find the water source, and then proper remediation: isolating the area, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment. The goal is to remove the colony, not just bleach the visible spots. Given Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use, this environment allows mold to regrow quickly if the underlying moisture issue isn't solved. A reputable company will be able to provide a post-remediation verification test from an independent lab to confirm the spore count is back to a normal level, which is your assurance it's been handled for good. |
