Black mold in closet corner - how to clean and who to call?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It's gotten worse since the weather got more humid last month. I'm really worried about our clothes and what's causing it. What's the best way to clean this safely and who should I call to check for moisture inside the wall?

That black spot pattern is a classic sign of condensation mould, extremely common here due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The interior wall likely has a cold spot where moist air condenses, creating the dampness mould needs to grow.
For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the area with a cloth dampened with white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover. Do not dry brush, as it releases spores. Discard any visibly mould-damaged clothing or items. The cause, however, is moisture within the wall cavity, which cleaning alone won't fix. You need a professional to identify the moisture source. In Dubai, this is often a tiny AC condensate drain leak or internal condensation that has soaked the insulation. A certified mould inspector should use a borescope to visually inspect inside the wall and a moisture meter to quantify the dampness. This diagnosis is critical—simply cleaning the surface will result in rapid regrowth. For assessment, call a company with IIRC or IICRC-certified inspectors who can provide a detailed report with moisture readings and likely causes. They should be independent from remediation companies to avoid conflict of interest. Resolving the hidden moisture issue is the only way to protect your belongings long-term. |
