Black mold in closet: dangerous and how to remove in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on the wall facing the outside. I think it got worse after all the humidity last month, but now it's starting to spread onto some of our clothes. Is this dangerous black mold and what's the best way to get rid of it for good in a Dubai villa, or should I call a professional company straight away?

Black spots in a closet on an exterior wall point strongly to condensation issues, which are common in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC use creating temperature differentials. While the term "black mold" is often misused, any mold spreading onto belongings indicates an active moisture problem that needs immediate attention.

The primary health risk depends on the species and your sensitivity. Many common household molds cause allergic reactions like sneezing, congestion, and skin irritation. Prolonged exposure can worsen asthma, particularly for children or those with respiratory conditions. Without a lab test, it's impossible to confirm if it's the more notorious Stachybotrys, but the spreading growth elevates the concern.

For a small area, you can attempt cleaning with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution. However, this only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying moisture source. In a villa, the leak could be from a roof issue, faulty external waterproofing, or even condensation within the wall cavity itself. The humidity last month likely exacerbated it, but the root cause is structural.

Given that it's spreading and has contaminated fabrics, I recommend a professional assessment. DIY efforts often fail because they don't identify and rectify the hidden source of water intrusion. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the condensation point. Remediation involves isolating the area, removing contaminated porous materials like damaged drywall, HEPA vacuuming, and applying antimicrobial treatments. For clothing, specialized laundry treatment is needed to prevent spores from spreading.

The key to a permanent solution is fixing the moisture entry point, which may require repairs to the villa's external envelope, improving ventilation, or adding insulation to the cold wall behind the closet. Simply cleaning the surface will result in it returning.
