Black mold in closet despite AC? How to treat adn prevent?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black speckles forming in the corners of our bedroom closet, especially on the leather shoes and bags we store in there. The room is in our villa in Mirdif and we run the AC constantly, so I'm confused about where the moisture is coming from. What's the best way to treat this and what can I do to stop it from coming back for good?

The black speckles are likely mould, and it's a common issue in Dubai villas despite AC use. Your closet's corner is probably a cold spot where condensation forms when humid air meets the cooler surface, creating the moisture mould needs to grow. This is especially true for leather, which can absorb that moisture.

First, address the active growth. For a small area, wearing a mask, clean it with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted detergent. Dry the area thoroughly immediately after. For porous items like leather, a specialist cleaner may be needed. If the growth is extensive or returns quickly, a professional inspection is wise to identify the hidden moisture source and assess the species, as some types require specific remediation protocols.

To prevent recurrence, you must control humidity. Ensure your AC is set to a consistently cool temperature, as frequent on/off cycles cause more condensation. A standalone dehumidifier in the bedroom can significantly reduce ambient moisture. Improve air circulation by not overpacking the closet and leaving space between items and the wall. For valuable leather goods, consider using silica gel desorbent packs inside storage boxes to create a localised dry microenvironment.

For a permanent solution, a humidity assessment can pinpoint why that specific closet corner is a condensation point. In many Mirdif villas, this is due to external wall temperature differences or slight AC airflow imbalances, which are correctable.
