Black mold in closet: DIY bleach or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom’s walk-in closet has had this damp, earthy smell for a couple of months, and I just pulled out a stack of shoes to find a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading on the back wall. The room is right next to the bathroom and I’m worried the humidity from our showers is causing it. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional company to check it out?

Based on your description, this is a serious situation that warrants a professional inspection, not a DIY bleach attempt. The presence of a persistent damp, earthy odor and visible black fuzzy growth on a structural wall is highly indicative of an active mold colony, likely Stachybotrys chartarum or another toxigenic species.

In Dubai's climate, the high ambient humidity, especially when combined with condensation from year-round AC use and steam from adjacent bathrooms, creates a perfect environment for mold to thrive within wall cavities. Bleach is a surface-level disinfectant that is ineffective on porous materials like drywall and concrete. It will only bleach the visible colour without addressing the root hyphae (roots) deep within the material, leading to rapid regrowth. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize toxic spores, significantly increasing your exposure and contaminating other areas of your home.

UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, emphasize the importance of professional assessment and safe remediation to protect indoor air quality and occupant health. A certified inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and concentration, use moisture meters to locate the source of the dampness (which could be a small plumbing leak, condensation, or capillary action), and contain the area before remediation begins.

For a confirmed case of black mold in a bedroom environment, we strongly advise against handling it yourself. Please contact our team for a comprehensive assessment.
