Black mold in closet: DIY clean or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it’s been worse since the humidity spiked last week. I’m worried it's from a hidden leak. Is this something I can clean with bleach myself, or do I need to call a professional to check the walls?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants a professional inspection, not a DIY attempt with bleach. The location on an exterior wall in a Jumeirah villa, coupled with the correlation to high humidity, strongly suggests a condensation issue or a potential hidden leak within the wall cavity. The Dubai climate, with its extreme humidity and reliance on year-round air conditioning, creates perfect conditions for condensation to form on and within cooler exterior walls.

Bleach is a superficial solution. It may remove the visible discoloration on the surface, but it will not address the underlying moisture source. More critically, it will not kill the mold roots (hyphae) penetrating the porous building materials like drywall or plaster. The mold will almost certainly return. Disturbing the patch without proper containment can also aerosolize harmful spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your closet and bedroom.

A certified mold inspector will conduct a comprehensive assessment. This includes using moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to non-invasively scan the wall and identify the exact source and extent of the moisture intrusion, whether it's condensation, a leaking pipe, or a breach in the building envelope. Air and surface sampling may also be recommended to identify the species and concentration of mold present, which is crucial for determining the appropriate remediation protocol.

For a confirmed issue like this, professional remediation is the only way to ensure it is resolved safely and permanently. Our teams at Saniservice are trained in the latest methodologies, following IICRC standards for containment, removal, and hygienization to protect your home and health.
