Black mold in closet: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I just found some black speckles in the corner of our master bedroom closet where I store the winter blankets. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah Park villa for two years and never had an issue until this past humid season. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call in a professional mold inspection company to check the walls?

Based on the symptoms you've described—increased coughing and visible black speckles in a closet—a professional mold inspection is strongly recommended. The humid climate in Dubai, particularly in areas like Jumeirah Park, creates ideal conditions for mold growth. The condensation from year-round AC use, combined with high ambient humidity, often leads to moisture accumulation within wall cavities and enclosed spaces like closets, which is not always visible.

While a small, surface-level patch might sometimes be addressed with a diluted bleach solution, this is only a temporary cosmetic fix. Bleach does not address the root cause of the moisture and is ineffective on porous materials like drywall and wood, where mold roots (hyphae) penetrate deeply. Disturbing the mold yourself can also aerosolize spores, potentially worsening your family's respiratory symptoms.

A certified inspector will conduct a comprehensive assessment. This includes using moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden moisture sources within the wall behind the closet, which is highly probable. They will also perform air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and spore concentration levels, which is critical for determining the appropriate remediation protocol and for health reasons. This scientific approach is essential, as what appears as minor speckling can often be the tip of a larger problem.

Given your children's health symptoms, a professional evaluation is not just advisable but necessary. For a thorough inspection and accurate diagnosis, please contact our team at Saniservice. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an assessment.
