Black mold in closet: DIY clean or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It's gotten worse since the humidity spiked last month. I'm worried it's spreading but don't know if this is something I can just clean with bleach or if I need to call a professional company to handle it. Should I attempt to clean this mold myself or is it a sign of a bigger problem that needs an expert?

Based on the description of black spots on an interior wall that have worsened with increased humidity, this is a strong indicator of a persistent moisture issue, not just surface condensation. In Dubai's climate, where high external humidity and year-round AC use create significant temperature differentials, this is a common problem. The location on an interior wall is particularly concerning, as it suggests the moisture source may be hidden, such as a small plumbing leak within the wall, inadequate insulation leading to cold spots and condensation, or even a breach in the building's vapor barrier.

Attempting a DIY clean with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. It also introduces additional moisture, potentially exacerbating the problem. More critically, improper cleaning can aerosolize toxic mold spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your home and posing a significant health risk.

UAE regulations and best practices for mold remediation, especially for suspected black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum), require professional assessment and containment. A certified inspector will conduct air and surface sampling to identify the species and concentration, use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact moisture source hidden within the wall cavity, and develop a remediation plan that includes proper containment, HEPA filtration, and safe removal of affected materials.

Given the progression and location, this is not a surface issue. I recommend an immediate professional inspection to prevent further structural damage and potential health effects.
