Black mold in closet: DIY clean or call professionals?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet on the outer wall of my villa in Jumeirah has developed these black speckles all over the leather shoes and bags stored inside. I only noticed it after coming back from a two-week holiday, and the room felt really damp even with the AC running. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or a specific spray from ACE, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company to stop it from coming back?

That's a classic sign of a condensation and humidity issue, exacerbated by Dubai's climate. The outer villa wall is likely a "cold bridge," where the air-conditioned interior meets the hot exterior, causing moisture to condense inside the closet. This creates the perfect damp environment for mold to flourish on organic materials like leather.
For the items, a DIY approach can be attempted for surface mold if the items are valuable. Use a soft cloth lightly dampened with a solution of white vinegar and water or a dedicated leather cleaner. Test it on an inconspicuous spot first, as mold can permanently stain leather. However, cleaning the items alone won't solve the problem. The root cause is the environmental condition within the closet. You need to address the moisture source to prevent immediate regrowth. Improve air circulation by not overpacking the closet and occasionally leaving the doors open. A moisture-absorbing product like silica gel can help in the short term. For a permanent solution, the cause of the condensation on that wall must be professionally diagnosed. This could involve an infrared thermal imaging inspection to identify the exact cold spot and assess for any hidden leaks or insulation failures. In many Dubai villas, this requires a professional assessment to stop the cycle of moisture accumulation. They can determine if remediation, improved insulation, or a dedicated dehumidification strategy is needed. |
