Black mold in closet: DIY fix or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It's an interior wall and the room always feels a bit damp, even with the AC running. I'm worried it's spreading but not sure if it's a simple fix with bleach or if the problem is deeper in the wall. Should I tackle this myself or call in a professional to check it out?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of a hidden mold issue here in the UAE. The black spots appearing in an interior closet, coupled with a persistent damp feeling despite AC use, are major red flags. The dampness suggests a potential source of moisture behind the wall, possibly from a small leak in a pipe or, more commonly in Dubai, from condensation due to thermal bridging where the cold wall meets the humid air.

Forget bleach. It's a temporary surface fix that doesn't address the moisture source or kill the roots (hyphae) of the mold. it can also damage materials and release harmful spores into the air.

Given the location and the fact you've sensed dampness for a while, the problem is almost certainly deeper within the wall cavity. A DIY approach is not recommended and can actually make the situation worse by disturbing and spreading the colony. UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, have strict guidelines for indoor air quality and proper remediation protocols to prevent cross-contamination.

You need a professional inspection. We use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and borescopes to identify the exact moisture source and the full extent of the infestation hidden from view. Only then can a proper remediation plan, which includes containment, safe removal, and addressing the root cause, be implemented.
