Black mold in closet: DIY fix or call building management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these black, speckly patches spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it seems to be getting worse. What's the fastest way to deal with this myself, or should I call the building management first?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and the specific conditions of your closet. The location on an exterior wall suggests a potential thermal bridge, where the temperature difference between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior causes condensation to form inside the wall cavity, providing the perfect moisture source for mold.

For a DIY approach, first identify and stop the moisture source. Ensure your AC is running adequately to dehumidify the space and that the closet is not overly crammed, restricting airflow. You can clean small patches (less than one square meter) with a solution of detergent and water, but never use bleach as it does not kill mold roots and can worsen indoor air quality. However, DIY is a temporary fix. You are likely only removing the visible colony, not the hidden hyphae roots within the porous wall material. The mold will almost certainly return without addressing the underlying moisture issue and performing a proper antimicrobial treatment.

You should absolutely inform your building management or landlord immediately. Under UAE tenancy laws, structural issues, which include persistent dampness and water intrusion from building envelope failures, are typically the responsibility of the property owner. They need to investigate potential leaks or insulation faults in the exterior wall.

Given the speed of the spread you've described, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact source of the moisture hidden within the wall, which is crucial for a permanent solution. We then provide a detailed remediation protocol.
