Black mold in closet: DIY fix or call landlord?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building. I’m worried it’s from the high humidity and I don’t want it to ruin our stuff or affect our health.
Is this something I need to get my landlord to fix immediately, or is there a safe DIY cleaning solution I can try first for a small area?

Black mold in a closet on an exterior wall is a common issue in Dubai, often caused by condensation forming where the cold interior meets the hot, humid exterior air. Given its location and that it's spreading, this is likely a building envelope issue, not just surface moisture.
For a small area, you can carefully clean it with a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach (1 part bleach to 10 parts water), wearing an N95 mask and gloves. However, this is a temporary fix if the underlying condensation problem isn't addressed. The mold will almost certainly return. In the UAE, the landlord is typically responsible for fixing the source of the moisture intrusion, as it's a structural defect. You should notify them immediately in writing, as this qualifies as a necessary maintenance request. They are obligated to investigate and repair the cause, which may involve checking for insulation gaps or leaks in the external wall. Given the climate's year-round high humidity, a professional inspection is wise to confirm the type of mold and identify the exact moisture source. Simply cleaning it without fixing the root cause will lead to recurrence and potential health issues, especially in a space storing fabrics. Move your winter clothes to a different, dry location to prevent cross-contamination until the issue is fully resolved. |
