Black mold in closet: DIY fix or call management now?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall that faces the outside. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading. What’s the best way to deal with this myself, or should I call the building management immediately?

Based on the symptoms you've described—black spots on an exterior wall corner, recent high humidity, and a perceived spread—this is a situation that warrants immediate and professional attention. In the UAE's climate, where high external humidity conflicts with year-round air conditioning, this creates significant temperature differentials on walls, leading to condensation and creating the perfect environment for mold, particularly on cold bridges like the one you've identified.

While minor surface mold on non-porous materials can sometimes be addressed with a diluted bleach solution, your case suggests a more embedded issue. Attempting a DIY fix on what is likely a condensation-related problem will only address the symptom, not the root cause (the moisture source). The mold will almost certainly return, potentially spreading further into the wall cavity.

You should contact your building management immediately. Under Dubai Municipality regulations, the building's owner or management is typically responsible for addressing structural issues that lead to moisture intrusion and mold growth, such as inadequate insulation or sealing on exterior walls. Inform them of the problem and request a professional assessment.

For a comprehensive solution that ensures the mold is safely eradicated and the moisture source is identified and rectified, I strongly recommend a professional inspection and remediation service. Our team at Saniservice specializes in this exact scenario. We use thermal imaging to pinpoint the condensation source, conduct air and surface sampling to identify the mold type and spore count, and perform certified remediation to ensure it is removed safely without cross-contaminating your home.

Do not delay. For immediate advice or to schedule an inspection, please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
