Black mold in closet: DIY fix or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed dark, fuzzy black spots appearing in the corners of our master bedroom closet, and the clothes in there feel damp. This seems to have gotten way worse over the last month of high humidity. Is this a problem I can fix myself with a dehumidifier from ACE, or do I need to call in a professional mold remediation company to get it properly cleaned and assessed?

Based on the symptoms you've described—dark fuzzy spots on walls and a damp feel to the clothing—this is a classic presentation of active mold growth, likely Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) or Aspergillus, both common in the UAE's high-humidity climate. This is a serious indoor air quality issue that requires immediate attention.

A dehumidifier from ACE is an excellent tool for prevention and managing ambient humidity, but it is not a remediation device. The mold you see is only the visible surface colony; the hyphae (root structure) penetrate deep into the porous building materials (drywall, plaster) and your clothing fibers. Simply wiping the surface will not remove it and will aerosolize harmful spores throughout your villa. The underlying moisture source must be identified and corrected; it could be a small plumbing leak, thermal bridging causing condensation in the closet, or inadequate ventilation, which is a common issue in many villas here.

Under the UAE's public health and building codes, significant mold infestations are considered a contaminant that can affect the structural integrity of the property and the health of its occupants. For a proper assessment and remediation, a professional company is absolutely necessary. We use specialized tools like thermal imaging cameras to find hidden moisture, borescopes to look inside cavities, and air quality meters to spore count. The remediation process involves containment, HEPA filtration, and the proper antimicrobial application to ensure it is eradicated at the source.

For a situation like this in your master closet, my strong recommendation is to call in a professional to get it properly cleaned and assessed. Please call our team at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive inspection and quote. Don't risk your health or your property with a DIY approach on this one.
