Black mold in closet: DIY fix or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside and the room always feels a bit damp. I'm handy with a spray bottle of bleach, but my wife is worried it's a bigger issue because of the humidity. Is this something I can safely tackle myself, or do I need to call a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of a moisture issue, very common in Dubai due to our high humidity, especially in closets on exterior walls. While a small patch might seem like a simple DIY job, I strongly advise against using bleach. Bleach only removes the surface discoloration; it doesn't kill the mold roots (hyphae) and its high water content can actually feed the problem long-term.

The critical factor here is the persistent dampness. This indicates a potential thermal bridge in the wall or a minor condensation issue, which is the root cause. If you don't address the moisture source, the mold will absolutely return, often worse than before.

For a proper DIY attempt, you'd need to use an EPA-approved fungicide, wear proper PPE (N95 mask, gloves, goggles), and scrub the area. However, given the location (bedroom, on porous drywall) and the fact it's recurring, a professional inspection is highly recommended. We need to identify the exact moisture source with tools like thermal cameras and moisture meters to prevent recurrence.

Under the Dubai Municipality guidelines, any mold affecting the building structure or indoor air quality should be handled by certified professionals to ensure it's done safely and effectively, preventing cross-contamination.

My advice? Get a professional assessment. The small cost will give you peace of mind and a permanent solution. We can identify if it's just surface condensation or something more serious. Call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a consultation.
