Black mold in closet: DIY fix or contact management?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black, speckled patches growing on the back wall of our master bedroom closet. It's the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity we've had this summer, I'm really worried it's spreading. What's the most effective way to treat this ourselves, or should we contact the building management immediately?

Since the mold is on an exterior wall in a Dubai summer, high humidity is likely causing condensation inside the wall cavity. This is a common issue here. For a small area (less than one square meter), a DIY approach may be sufficient.
Start by mixing a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Gently scrub the area—do not aggressively brush it, as this can release spores. After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry. A dehumidifier or a fan directed at the space is crucial to prevent immediate regrowth. However, because the mold is on a structural, exterior wall, the moisture source could be a building envelope issue, like a hidden leak or inadequate insulation. DIY cleaning only addresses the visible growth, not the underlying cause. In the UAE, building management is typically responsible for the structural integrity of the exterior walls and common plumbing. It is advisable to report this to them immediately to investigate the moisture source. A professional inspection with moisture meters is often needed to diagnose the root cause, which DIY methods cannot identify. If the problem is internal condensation from AC temperature settings, managing indoor humidity below 60% is your best long-term defense. |
