Black mold in closet: DIY fix or professional inspection?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few black spots growing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, and it seems to be spreading. It's on the wall that faces the outside of the building. With the humidity lately, I'm worried it's getting worse, but I'm not sure if it's a quick fix I can do with bleach or if I need to call a professional to check inside the walls. Is this something I can handle myself or should I get a proper mold inspection?

Given the location on an exterior wall and the humid conditions, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The black spots are likely due to condensation forming inside the wall cavity, a common issue in Dubai's climate where cool AC interiors meet hot, humid exteriors. Bleach is a temporary surface fix that fails to address the hidden moisture source.

Attempting a DIY fix could disturb the mold, spreading spores to other areas of your home. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the exact source of water intrusion behind the wall. This is crucial, as the visible growth is often just a small portion of the actual problem.

For a definitive answer on the mold type and health risk, the inspection should include air and surface sampling sent to an accredited microbiology lab for analysis. This identifies the species and concentration, which dictates the appropriate remediation protocol. Without this data, you're treating blindly.

Given the property is two years old, this could also be a construction-related issue, such as insufficient insulation or a breach in the vapor barrier, which a professional assessment can identify. They will provide a scope of work for remediation and, most importantly, recommendations to prevent recurrence.
