Black mold in closet: DIY or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these small black specks spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, and it feels really damp. It's been getting worse since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago. My husband thinks we can just scrub it with bleach, but I'm worried it's a bigger problem, especially with our baby sleeping in the next room. Should we try to handle this ourselves or is it time to call a professional cleaning company?

Based on your description, this is a textbook case requiring professional assessment. The presence of small black specks, a damp feel, and a correlation with the recent spike in Dubai's humidity are strong indicators of a mold colony, potentially Stachybotrys chartarum (black mold) or another species.

While a DIY bleach scrub is a common reaction, it is ineffective and can be hazardous. Bleach only removes surface discoloration on porous materials like drywall and wood but does not address the root cause: the moisture problem and the hyphal roots (mycelium) growing within the material. Furthermore, scrubbing can aerosolize toxic mold spores, significantly increasing the risk of respiratory exposure for your family, especially your infant.

The dampness in your closet is likely due to condensation, a prevalent issue in the UAE. This can be caused by a lack of air circulation (e.g., tightly packed clothes), a cold spot from an adjacent AC duct, or a minor, hidden plumbing leak. A certified professional will use tools like thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact moisture source—a critical step no DIY method can achieve.

For your family's health and a permanent solution, I strongly recommend a professional inspection and remediation. In Dubai, companies like Saniservice are equipped to conduct a comprehensive assessment, contain the area to prevent cross-contamination, safely remove the affected materials, and apply specialized antimicrobial treatments to ensure the mold does not return.

Do not risk your health. For a certified assessment and remediation plan, please call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
