Black mold in closet: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet. I wiped it away with some vinegar last week, but it's already come back and seems worse, especially after the recent humidity. Is this something I can tackle myself with a proper cleaner, or do you think I need to call in a professional?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth exacerbated by the Dubai climate. The rapid return after a superficial cleaning with vinegar is a significant red flag. Vinegar is not an EPA or Dubai Municipality-approved biocide and often only bleaches the surface hyphae, leaving the root mycelium intact within the building material to regrow stronger.

The key issue is not the visible growth but the hidden moisture source. In a closet, this is typically due to condensation from an adjacent external wall (a cold bridge) interacting with our high ambient humidity, or a slow leak from plumbing or AC drain lines within the wall cavity. The persistent humidity, especially after recent weather, provides the perfect conditions for proliferation.

For a recurrence in less than a week, I strongly recommend against further DIY attempts. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize spores, leading to wider contamination and potential health issues. The Dubai Municipality has specific guidelines for mold assessment and remediation to ensure occupant safety and prevent structural damage.

A professional inspection is necessary. We use thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact moisture source and borescopes to inspect inside walls. Air and surface sampling then identifies the species to determine the appropriate remediation protocol, as some molds require more aggressive containment.
