Black mold in closet: DIY or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to get these black speckles in the corners after the humidity last month. I wiped it down with vinegar, but it came back even worse a week later and now my sinuses are constantly stuffy in the morning. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of mold growth driven by Dubai's high ambient humidity, exacerbated by the recent humid period. The location on an interior wall is a significant red flag; this strongly suggests a hidden condensation issue, likely due to a thermal bridge where the cold from your air conditioning unit is meeting the warm, humid air, creating the perfect environment for mold. The fact that it returned after a vinegar cleaning and is correlating with sinus issues indicates a persistent and likely established colony.
Vinegar is insufficient for porous surfaces and does not address the underlying moisture problem. A stronger DIY cleaner like bleach is also not recommended. It may superficially remove the visible stain but will not kill the root system (hyphae) within the material. Furthermore, improper use can release a high volume of spores and harmful vapors into your living space, potentially worsening your sinusitis and other health risks, which range from allergic reactions to more severe respiratory irritation. Given the recurrence and your health symptoms, a professional inspection is absolutely warranted. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact source of condensation and moisture meters to determine the extent of the saturation within the wall. Air and surface sampling can then identify the specific mold genus to inform the correct remediation protocol, which is crucial for ensuring it is removed safely and completely. For a situation like this, I strongly advise against a DIY approach.
