Black mold in closet: DIY or call Dubai building management?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots forming in the corners of our master bedroom closet, especially on the outer wall facing the marina. It’s gotten worse since the humidity spiked last month. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this for good in our Dubai apartment, and should I call the building management first or just handle it myself?

Black mold in a closet on an outer wall is a common issue in Dubai apartments, especially facing the marina with high humidity. The wall is likely a "cold bridge," where the indoor surface cools from AC and condenses airborne moisture, creating a perfect damp environment for mold.
For a small area (less than one square meter), you can attempt DIY. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Clean with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. Do not simply paint over it. However, this often only addresses the surface growth, not the moisture source. You should notify building management first. By Dubai Municipality regulations, the building owner is typically responsible for the structural integrity and waterproofing of the external building envelope. The mold inside is likely a symptom of inadequate insulation or a sealing failure in the external wall, which they are obligated to investigate and repair. A professional inspection can confirm if the moisture is condensate or a leak. Without the building fixing the underlying cause, the mold will return. For a lasting solution, the root moisture issue must be resolved, followed by proper remediation of the affected area to remove spores from the air and surfaces. |
