Black mold in closet: DIY or call professional now?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It wasn't there during the summer, but since the weather got more humid a few weeks ago, the musty smell has been really strong. Given how quickly it seems to have appeared, is this something I need to call a professional to handle immediately, or can I tackle it myself this weekend?

The rapid appearance of black mold in a Jumeirah villa closet is a classic symptom of Dubai's high humidity interacting with a hidden condensation point. Since it was hidden behind boxes, the lack of air circulation created a perfect microclimate for mold growth.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, a thorough DIY approach can be effective. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a detergent solution, then disinfect with a diluted white vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution. Crucially, you must identify and address the moisture source. Check for a leaking AC condensate drain pipe in the wall or ceiling above, a small plumbing leak, or condensation forming on a cold wall.

However, given its rapid recurrence and strong musty odour, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The visible patch is often just the tip of the iceberg; the mold may have spread inside the wall cavity. A certified inspector uses moisture meters and borescopes to find the true extent and source. They can also perform air and surface sampling to identify the species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol. In many villas, the root cause is a poorly insulated exterior wall causing condensation, which requires a building solution, not just cleaning. For peace of mind and to ensure it doesn't return, an assessment is the most reliable course of action.
