Black mold in closet: DIY or call professionals?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It must have been growing slowly for a while because it’s pretty big now, and the whole room has a damp smell. I’m worried it’s from the humidity and I don’t know if I can just scrub it off with bleach or if this is something serious that needs a professional company to handle. Is this a DIY job or should I call in the experts?

The size and damp smell indicate this is likely beyond a simple surface issue. Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer months, creates ideal conditions for mold to penetrate porous materials like drywall and wood. Scrubbing visible growth with bleach only addresses the surface and can push spores deeper; it also fails to address the hidden moisture source.

For a large, established patch, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will use moisture meters to locate the water source—often condensation from an AC duct, a small leak, or capillary action from the foundation—and thermal cameras to see the full extent behind walls. This is critical, as the visible spot is often just the tip of the iceberg.

DIY attempts can inadvertently spread spores throughout your home during cleaning. A proper remediation involves containment, HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and the safe removal of affected porous materials. Saniservice's lab testing can also identify the mold species, which is important for assessing potential health risks and ensuring the correct remediation protocol is followed.

Given the villa's age and Jumeirah's proximity to the coast, the underlying cause is likely persistent ambient humidity or a building envelope issue, both of which require a professional solution to prevent rapid regrowth.
