Black mold in closet: DIY or professional cleanup cost?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet in our Mirdif villa has had a damp smell since the weather got really humid a couple of months ago. I finally pulled everything out and found a bunch of black fuzzy spots all over the back wall and on some of our leather shoes and bags. I’m really worried it’s spreading but have no idea what this kind of cleanup should cost. For a walk-in closet about 3m x 2m, is this a DIY job with bleach or should I call a professional company, and what’s a reasonable price to get it properly treated?

Based on your description of the black fuzzy growth on the wall and your leather goods in Mirdif, this is a clear case of active mold proliferation, strongly linked to Dubai's high humidity and the condensation cycles created by constant air conditioning use. This is not a simple surface issue; it indicates a persistent moisture problem, likely within the wall cavity itself.
Attempting a DIY cleanup with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact. It can also aggravate the problem by introducing additional moisture. Disturbing the mold without proper containment protocols will aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your villa. For a 3m x 2m walk-in closet with visible growth on personal items and walls, professional remediation is the only safe and effective solution. The cost for professional remediation of an area this size can vary based on the extent of the infestation within the wall. A reasonable estimate for a proper containment, removal of affected porous materials (e.g., drywall), HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial treatment, and addressing the moisture source would typically range from AED 2,500 to AED 5,000. The final cost must be determined by a certified inspection. Given the health risks and potential for structural damage, an immediate professional assessment is critical. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice can identify the exact moisture source and provide a definitive scope of work and quotation.
