Black mold in closet: DIY or professional for small area?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet in Silicon Oasis. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been spreading since the humidity kicked in a couple of months ago. I'm worried about the health of my family and damaging our belongings. Is this a job I can handle myself with products from Ace Hardware, or do I need to call a professional, and if so, what's a realistic cost for a small area like this?

Given the location on an exterior wall in Silicon Oasis and its recent spread with the humidity, this is likely a condensation issue exacerbated by Dubai's climate. The wall is probably colder than the room's air, causing moisture to condense and create a perfect environment for mold.

For a small, contained area, a DIY approach can be attempted if the underlying moisture issue is resolved. First, identify and fix the source. Ensure your AC is running efficiently to control humidity and that there's no leak from outside. Then, wearing an N95 mask and gloves, clean the area with a solution of diluted detergent or a dedicated mold cleaner from a hardware store. Scrub the visible growth and allow the wall to dry completely.

However, professional assessment is strongly recommended here. The visible spots are often just the surface manifestation; the mold’s root structure (hyphae) can penetrate porous materials like drywall and paint. A professional inspection can determine the extent of the infiltration behind the wall and identify the species, which is critical for assessing health risks, especially for families with children or allergy sufferers. They also ensure containment during removal to prevent spores from spreading to the rest of your home and belongings.

The cost for a professional job on a small area like a closet is generally more accessible than a full-home remediation. You can expect the price to be influenced by the need for diagnostic moisture readings and potentially cutting into the wall to assess the cavity. Always request a detailed assessment and quote that includes containment procedures and verification testing to confirm the area is clean and dry after the work is completed.
