Black mold in closet: DIY or professional inspection?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It’s been extra humid lately and I’m worried it’s spread behind the walls. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach from ACE, or should I call a professional company for an inspection, and what’s the typical cost for a small room like that?

Black mold in a closet, especially in a humid Jumeirah villa, is a common issue but should be addressed carefully. The high humidity we experience, combined with condensation from AC units and reduced airflow behind boxes, creates an ideal environment for mold growth.

For a small, visible patch (less than one square meter), a DIY approach can be effective if you address the moisture source. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. A solution of detergent and water is often more effective than bleach, which only removes surface discoloration and can be dangerous to inhale in an enclosed space. Scrub the area thoroughly and ensure it dries completely. However, bleach will not penetrate porous materials like drywall or wood, and if the mold returns, it indicates a persistent moisture problem.

Given your concern that it has spread behind the walls, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. Mold growth inside wall cavities is very common here when a persistent humidity source exists, like a small AC condensate leak or penetrating dampness. An inspection with a borescope can visually confirm the extent without destructive tearing. The cost for a professional assessment of a single room is typically a standard service fee, as the process requires the same equipment and expertise regardless of the initial visible size. It is a worthwhile investment to understand the true scope before any remediation begins.
