Black mold in closet: DIY removal or call Dubai pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It must have been growing slowly because the room has felt damp for a while, especially since the weather got more humid. I'm really worried about it spreading to our clothes and affecting our health. What's the most effective way to safely remove this myself, or should I call a professional company here in Dubai?

The black patch in your closet is likely due to the high humidity we experience in Dubai, especially behind items that restrict airflow. Before any removal, assess the size. If it's smaller than one square meter (approx. 10 sq ft), you can often manage it yourself safely.

For DIY, wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water or a diluted bleach solution (follow product instructions carefully). Scrub the area thoroughly, ensuring you've removed all discoloration and staining. After cleaning, the area must be completely dried. Use a dehumidifier or fan and address the moisture source—this is critical. In a closet, it's often condensation from an exterior wall or lack of ventilation.

However, given it's been growing for two years and the room feels consistently damp, the issue might be more extensive behind the walls. DIY cleaning only addresses surface mold, not the root cause or any hidden growth. For health safety and to prevent recurrence, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden water source. In Dubai, reputable remediation companies follow international standards like IICRC and provide verification that the mold and its cause have been properly addressed.
