Black mold in closet: emergency inspection or DIY fix?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. The weird thing is it’s directly behind where my wife’s shoe rack is, and the room has felt more humid lately even with the AC running constantly. Should we be calling someone for an emergency inspection this week, or is this something we can handle ourselves over the weekend?

Moisture trapped behind furniture against an interior wall in Dubai is a classic setup for mold. Given the high year-round humidity and constant AC use creating temperature differentials, this is likely due to condensation.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can address it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water and scrub the area. Discard any porous items like cardboard boxes that show mold growth. Crucially, move the shoe rack at least six inches away from the wall to allow air circulation and wipe down any condensation you find behind it.

However, if the mold returns quickly, the patch is larger, you smell a persistent musty odor, or anyone in the home has respiratory issues, a professional inspection is warranted. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source of dampness within the wall cavity, which a surface clean won't fix. This is not typically a middle-of-the-night emergency, but addressing it within the week is wise to prevent further spread.
