Black mold in closet: emergency or wait until weekend?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa's master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to get these black speckles in the corners after the recent humidity. I only noticed it a few days ago but my throat has been feeling a bit scratchy all week. Given how fast things can grow here, is this something I need to call a professional about immediately or can it wait until the weekend?

Given Dubai's high humidity and rapid mold growth rates, this likely requires professional assessment. The black speckles combined with your scratchy throat suggest active growth that's already affecting air quality.

For now, keep the closet door closed and avoid disturbing the area to prevent spore dispersal. Run a dehumidifier or your AC continuously on a dry setting to lower indoor humidity below 60%, which can help slow further growth. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can worsen airborne spores without addressing the root moisture issue.

While immediate emergency service isn't typically required if you are otherwise healthy, waiting more than a few days is not advisable. The underlying cause is likely condensation from the AC or a minor leak in that interior wall, which will continue to fuel growth. Professional inspection should identify the species and moisture source. In Dubai, remediation companies should provide a detailed scope of work and post-cleaning verification, often with lab results, to confirm the issue is resolved. Schedule an assessment as soon as possible.
