Black mold in closet from AC leak: DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, and all our winter clothes in there smell damp. I think it might be from a small AC leak we ignored a while back. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call a professional company here in Dubai for this?

Based on your description of black spots and a persistent damp smell on winter clothes, you are likely dealing with active mold growth, a common issue in Dubai's climate. The high humidity and constant AC operation create significant condensation risks, and a past leak provides the perfect moisture source for mold.

For a closet-sized area, a cautious DIY approach may be possible if the visible mold covers less than one square meter (approx. 10 square feet), which is a general guideline for safe handling. You must wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Carefully remove and wash the affected clothing in hot water. Clean hard surfaces with a detergent solution, followed by a disinfectant like diluted vinegar or a specialized mold-cleaning product. Crucially, you must identify and fix the source of the moisture; otherwise, the mold will return.

However, given that the mold is black and has already infiltrated porous materials like clothing, I strongly recommend a professional inspection. In the UAE, improper remediation can spread spores and exacerbate the problem. A certified company like Saniservice uses thermal imaging to find hidden moisture, professional-grade HEPA filtration to contain the area, and EPA-approved antimicrobials to safely remediate the mold and eliminate the odor at its source. For a definitive solution and to ensure your family's health, it is best to call experts.
