Black mold in closet from AC vent? How to clean?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. I think it might be from the AC unit's vent that’s right above it, as that wall always feels a bit damp and cold. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself, and should I be calling my building management to check the AC?

Based on your description, this is a classic case of condensation-induced mold growth, extremely common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC operation. The cold air from the vent is hitting the warmer surface of the wall inside the closet, causing moisture to condense and create the perfect damp environment for mold, especially the common black-colored Cladosporium or Aspergillus.
For a small area (less than 1 square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. First, ensure personal protection: wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety goggles. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and sealing the bottom with a towel. Use a HEPA vacuum to gently remove any loose spores from the surface. Then, scrub the affected area with a solution of detergent and warm water. After cleaning, wipe the area with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) to disinfect, but ensure excellent ventilation as bleach fumes are strong. The root cause, however, is the moisture. You must thoroughly dry the area using a fan or dehumidifier and address the condensation. Insulating the AC ductwork above the closet may be necessary. Crucially, you should immediately inform your building management or owner's association. Under Dubai's health and safety regulations, they are responsible for maintaining the building's central AC system and associated ductwork. The issue likely stems from poorly insulated ducts, excessive humidity in the system, or a clogged condensate drain line, all of which require professional HVAC servicing. Given the proximity to your clothing and the bedroom, which is a high-occupancy area, I strongly recommend a professional assessment. Mold can cause health issues and indicates a persistent moisture problem. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice can conduct a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the exact species and the full extent of the issue, then provide a certified remediation plan.
