Black mold in closet from bathroom; DIY clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
The corner of our master bedroom closet, the part that backs onto the bathroom, has started to show these black speckles on the wall. It's been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago, and now our clothes in that area have a faint damp smell. I'm worried it's spreading but don't know if this is something I can clean with bleach myself or if I need to call a professional company to look at it.

That sounds like a classic case of mold growth due to condensation and hidden moisture, a very common issue in Dubai homes where high bathroom humidity meets cold AC-chilled walls. The damp smell on your clothes confirms active growth.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt a careful DIY clean. Use a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold remover, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface color and can worsen the problem by adding moisture to the drywall. Scrub gently to avoid releasing spores, and wear an N95 mask and gloves. The critical step is fixing the source. Wipe down bathroom walls after showers, ensure your exhaust fan is working properly and runs long enough, and check that the bathroom door is left open to equalize humidity. However, the location—a closet backing onto a bathroom—strongly suggests hidden moisture within the wall cavity from a possible plumbing leak or chronic condensation. If the mold returns after cleaning, the drywall is stained deeply, or the affected area is larger than it first appears, a professional assessment is needed. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden source of water. In many villa complexes, the strata management may have approved providers for such moisture intrusion issues. A lab test can also identify the mold type, which is important for determining the right remediation approach if you have health concerns. |
