Black mold in closet from Dubai humidity? Fast fix?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of the building. The room has felt more humid lately, even with the AC running constantly. Could this be a leak from the recent humid weather, and what's the fastest way to deal with it properly in Dubai?

That black spotting is a classic sign of condensation-related mould, very common in Dubai's climate. The wall facing outside is likely a "cold bridge," where the outside heat meets your cooled indoor air, causing moisture to condense inside the wall. The recent high humidity has almost certainly accelerated this.
For a fast, proper fix, start by moving everything out of the closet to allow the area to dry completely. Wipe the visible mould off the surface with a microfiber cloth and a solution of diluted white vinegar or a dedicated mould-cleaning product. Do not simply paint over it, as the mould will regrow. However, this addresses only the symptom. The underlying issue is the moisture. You must identify and stop the source. Given its location on an exterior wall, the problem is likely insufficient insulation or a tiny crack in the building envelope allowing humid air in. The constant AC use can actually exacerbate the condensation on that cold surface. For a permanent solution, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use a moisture meter to pinpoint the exact condensation levels within the wall and an thermal imaging camera to identify the cold spot. Remediation often involves improving the wall's insulation or sealing the exterior penetration. In many cases, simply correcting the room's ventilation or adjusting the AC temperature can measurably reduce the condensation. Without fixing the moisture source, the mould will return. |
