Black mold in closet from humidity; clean and prevent?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and our villa is in The Springs, so I'm worried the humidity is seeping in. What’s the best way to clean this safely and what kind of dehumidifier or moisture absorber should I permanently keep in there to stop it from coming back?

That black patch is a classic sign of condensation or moisture seepage, especially on an exterior wall in a villa community like The Springs. The high humidity here, combined with the temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the hot exterior wall, creates the perfect environment for mold.
For safe cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner, not bleach, as bleach only removes the surface discoloration and not the root structure. Allow it to dry completely. If the patch is larger than one square meter, the wall feels soft, or the mold returns quickly, a professional inspection is needed to check for hidden moisture within the wall cavity. To prevent recurrence, address the humidity. A compact desiccant dehumidifier is more effective than silica gel absorbers in our climate and will actively pull moisture from the air. Look for a unit with a continuous drainage option or a large tank. Ensure your AC is running efficiently, as it acts as your primary dehumidifier. For a permanent solution, the underlying cause—likely a thermal bridge or minor water intrusion in the wall—must be identified and sealed by a specialist to prevent further condensation. |
