Black mold in closet from humidity: clean myself or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It’s been especially humid in our Jumeirah apartment the last few weeks and the AC has been running non-stop. What’s the best way to clean this myself, or should I immediately call my building management?

Black mould in closets is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use, which can create cold surfaces prone to condensation. For a small, isolated area (less than one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself.

Mix a solution of 80% white vinegar and 20% water in a spray bottle. Lightly mist the affected area, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush and wipe clean. Wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid inhaling spores. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface colour and does not kill the roots, allowing the mould to return. After cleaning, address the moisture source. Ensure the closet is not overpacked to allow for air circulation, and consider using a small desiccant dehumidifier inside.

However, if the mould covers a larger area, has a musty odour, or reappears quickly after cleaning, you should contact your building management. In Dubai, landlords and property management are typically responsible for addressing structural issues leading to dampness, such as faulty external waterproofing or leaking AC condensation lines. For a definitive diagnosis and to identify the mould species, a professional inspection with lab testing is recommended. This is the only way to confirm the potential health risk and the exact moisture source, which is often hidden within the wall.
