Black mold in closet from humidity: DIY or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, especially on the wall that faces the outside. It's been worse since the humidity spiked last month. I’m worried it's spreading. What’s the most effective way to deal with this here in Dubai, and should I call a professional or is it a DIY fix?

That black speckled pattern is almost certainly mold, and the location on an exterior wall during humid months points to condensation as the root cause. The temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the hot exterior wall creates a "cold bridge," allowing moisture to condense and mold to feed on the dust and organic materials in the wall.
For an area smaller than about one square meter, a DIY approach is possible. Start by wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the area with a diluted white vinegar or baking soda solution; avoid bleach as it only removes the surface colour and can push spores deeper. The critical step is to address the moisture source. Ensure your AC is set to a consistent temperature, ideally between 22-24°C, to minimize drastic temperature swings. Use a moisture absorber or a small desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet. Given its location on an exterior wall and the pattern of recurrence, this is likely a persistent issue. If the mold returns after cleaning or covers a larger area, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint the exact location and severity of the condensation and moisture meters to confirm the wall is dry after remediation. In many Dubai villas, the fix requires adding insulation to the interior side of the exterior wall to break the cold bridge, which is not a DIY task. A reputable inspector will provide a lab analysis to confirm the mold type, which is necessary to understand any potential health risks and ensure the remediation protocol is correct. |
