Black mold in closet: health risks and professional cleaning needed?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah Village Circle villa for two years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It must have been growing slowly for a while because the wall feels slightly damp. With the humidity lately, I’m worried it’s spreading. What are the actual health risks of this kind of mold and should we get a professional to test it, or is cleaning it ourselves enough?

Black mold in a closet, especially with a damp wall, indicates a moisture issue that needs immediate attention. The primary health risks from this type of exposure are respiratory irritation, persistent coughing, worsened asthma or allergy symptoms, and sinus congestion. For individuals with compromised immune systems or pre-existing respiratory conditions, the risks are elevated.

In Dubai's climate, this is almost certainly due to condensation from your AC system or a small, hidden leak. The high humidity provides constant fuel for mold growth. Simply cleaning the visible patch yourself with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution is a temporary fix; the underlying moisture source must be identified and resolved, or it will return.

For a persistent damp patch, a professional inspection is recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact source of the condensation or leak behind the wall. In many cases, the mold growth inside the wall cavity is more extensive than what is visible. A lab test can identify the species, which is useful for confirming the type and guiding the remediation strategy, especially if health symptoms are already present. The goal is to fix the root cause to prevent recurrence.
