Black mold in closet, how to clean and save items?« Back to Previous Page
|
Our master bedroom closet on the inside wall has this weird black speckling all over the leather shoes and bags I stored in there. I only opened it today to get my winter clothes out and was hit with a damp, earthy smell. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this, and the weather has been so humid lately. What’s the fastest way to deal with this before it spreads, and should I throw all this stuff out?

Based on your description of black speckling on leather items and a damp, earthy smell, you are very likely dealing with active mold growth, a common issue in Dubai due to our high ambient humidity and the constant cycling of air conditioning, which can create significant condensation on cooler interior walls.
The fastest initial step is to contain the area immediately. Close the closet door and seal the gap with tape to prevent spores from dispersing into the bedroom. Do not attempt to wipe or vacuum the mold, as this will aerosolize the spores. Your health is the priority; wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection before handling any items. Assessing whether to discard items depends on the material and extent of contamination. For porous materials like untreated leather, shoes, and fabric bags, salvaging them can be extremely difficult and often not recommended, as mold roots (hyphae) penetrate deep into the material. Non-porous items can be cleaned with appropriate antimicrobial agents. However, the critical step is identifying and resolving the moisture source. This is not a surface-level cleaning issue. The problem is likely hidden within the wall cavity, potentially caused by a leaking AC condensation drain line, inadequate insulation leading to thermal bridging and condensation, or a minor plumbing leak. This requires professional diagnostic equipment, such as thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters, to pinpoint the exact source—a service we provide at Saniservice. For a problem of this nature, a professional inspection is strongly advised to prevent structural damage and potential health issues. We are fully compliant with Dubai Municipality's environmental health and safety standards for remediation.
