Black mold in closet on exterior wall in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black speckles in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of the building. It’s been incredibly humid the last month and I’m worried it’s spread to the clothes. What’s the best way to handle this safely and who should I call in Dubai to get it professionally assessed?

Black speckles in a closet on an exterior wall during Dubai's humid season point directly to condensation mould. The temperature difference between your air-conditioned room and the hot exterior wall creates a "cold bridge," allowing moisture to condense and mould to grow, especially on organic materials like drywall, dust, and fabric.

Your immediate priority is to check the clothes. Mould spores embed in fibres. Inspect garments thoroughly; any with visible growth will likely need professional dry cleaning with specific anti-microbial treatment. For items without visible spots, sun-drying them outside during the hottest part of the day can help.

For the wall itself, do not bleach it. Bleach only removes surface colour and does not address the root cause. A solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated mould-cleaning product is more effective for small surface areas. However, scrubbing can aerosolize spores, so wear an N95 mask and gloves.

The underlying issue is the condensation, which will recur without remediation. For a professional assessment, you need a company that provides a full diagnostic, not just a cleaning. They should use a thermal imaging camera to identify the exact cold bridge and moisture meters to quantify the dampness within the wall. This identifies the true source. In Dubai, look for providers who can then produce a lab report from a certified microbiology lab identifying the mould species, which is crucial for understanding any potential health risks and for verifying the remediation was successful. This science-driven approach is the standard for resolving persistent humidity-related mould issues permanently.
